Just looked this game up and according to Wikipedia this super Mario 2 was deemed too hard by north American audiences during a play test and Nintendo instead used the other super Mario 2 instead , Nintendo basically said let's take Mario one but make it twice as hard and stick a 2 in the title ,this game has a legit reason to be hated by the fans.
